Vintage Butterfly Wing Pendant

£90.00

S113

A large, vintage, sterling silver, iridescent butterfly-wing pendant.  The wings are set beneath a protective teardrop silver and glass dome.

When worn, the iridescence can be seen from different angles.

There are light jeweller’s ‘scratch marks’ on the back of the pendant, which appear to be a stock number and a price in shillings.

This belongs to the tradition of butterfly jewellery that began in the late Victorian period. It increased in popularity when jeweller Thomas L. Mott made a range to show at the British Exposition of 1924.

I have not cleaned the back of the pendant as it has a lovely deep patina.
